I was pretty sure I couldn't manage soldering SMD components with my soldering iron, so I decided to order an inexpensive hot air gun (rework station 858D-style) and some solder paste off Amazon. It was well worth it! I just apply paste to the appropriate pads with the solder syringe, place the components with tweezers, and use the hot air gun to melt everything. Most of the components just snap into place; the few that don't I can adjust with tweezers, using the hot air gun to re-melt the solder.

One note: The step that says to bridge the 3 pads with solder or wire is actually just 2 pads in the latest iteration of the piece base PCB. I use a trimmed piece of scrap component leg to bridge these pads as it works great with the hot air gun.
